The AI Coding Assistant Reality Check on 8/26/2025
AI coding assistants are like having a smart but naive direct report who needs constant supervision - they're incredibly powerful but require experienced developers to manage their overconfidence and production blind spots.

After 3 months of coding with AI, here's what nobody tells you:
It's like having a smart but naive direct report who immediately tries every idea you have in your projects. And honestly? If I had to choose between hiring a person to help me or subscribing to an AI coding assistant right now, I'd definitely take the AI.
But that's based on my specific situation - taking on projects single-handedly and delivering. As a Senior Software Architect, I could do the work myself, but having the AI do it is just... easier.
The reality? AI wrote 98% of my current Node.js app. So when I needed to migrate from SQLite to PostgreSQL (not exactly a simple task), diving in without AI help wasn't happening. Why would I do this all myself?
But here's the catch: AI thinks it's like "hey, migrate this" and we're good to go. It's not. The AI is way overconfident and oblivious to many realities of production development.
More stories from the trenches coming soon. The bottom line? AI coding assistants are incredibly powerful, but they need adult supervision. And your 30 years of experience managing developers? Suddenly very relevant again.
